This musical was the brain child of creative producer, Judy Craymer. She met ABBA songwriters Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson in 1983
It was their song "The Winner Takes It All" that suggested to her the great theatrical potential of their pop songs. Judy presented hear idea to create a completely original play using their songs (unchanged just as they were written) only as a way to advance and support the story. The songwriters were not enthusiastic, but they were not completely opposed to the idea either. Finally in 1995 Judy was given the okay if she could present a screenplay Bjorn approved of. In 1997, Judy commissioned
Catherine Johnson
to write the book for the musical. In 1998,
Phyllida Lloyd
became the director for the show. It is very unusual for three women to form the collaborative force behind such a commercial success in musical theatre, and this unusual collaboration is likely responsible for the fact that the story features three strong women.
The story takes place on a fictional Greek island. Sophie, a 20-year old English girl, discovers her mother Donna's old diary and finds entries which describe intimate dates with three men. Sophie believes that one of these men is her father, and sends each an invitation to her wedding without letting her mother know. Sophie convinces them not to tell Donna that she invited them. Sophie's quest to discover the identity of her father brings the 3 men from her mother's past back to the Greek island paradise they last visited 20 years ago.The day before the wedding Donna is receiving guests at her tavern, and is very surprised and more than a little devastated when she sees her three previous boyfriends all in the same place at the same time.
Mamma Mia! had its world premier in Lndon on April 6, 1999. The show first hit US shores in November 2000, opening at The Orpheum Theatre in SanFrancisco. This was the first of 2 productions currently touring America. Mamma Mia! had its Broadway debut on October 18, 2001 at the Winter Garden Theatre. The fourth US production of Mamma Mia! opened in 2003 at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. , Mamma Mia! is the longest running, and most successful Broadway play ever in Las Vegas. In April 2008 the show celebrated its two thousandth performance in Las Vegas and sets the precedent for musicals in Las Vegas, as no other full-length Broadway show has ever enjoyed such enduring success on The Strip.
