The Oakland Raiders are based in Oakland, CA. The Dallas Cowboys may be Americas Team but America is a RAIDER NATION, due in large part to the sheer magnitude of its fan base all over America. They currently play in the American Football Conference (AFC) Western Division. The Raiders began play in 1960 as the eighth charter member of the American Football League (AFL), where they won one championship and three division titles. They joined the NFL in 1970 when the AFL and NFL merged. Since joining the NFL, the Raiders have won twelve division titles and three Super Bowls. Oakland also appeared in two other Super Bowls.

 

During their first three seasons, the Raiders struggled both on and off the field. In 1963, current owner Al Davis joined the team as head coach and general manager. Davis immediately turned the Raiders into winners, and from 1963 until 2002 the team had only seven losing seasons. In 1982, after years of legal battles, Davis moved the team from Oakland to Los Angeles, only to move the team back to Oakland in 1995. In 2000, head coach Jon Gruden led Oakland to their first division title since 1990.  Gruden left to become head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who under his leadership defeated his former Raider team in a lopsided 48-21 Super Bowl XXXVII victory.  In January 2007, the team named 31-year-old Lane Kiffin as their fourth head coach since Jon Grudens departure and since that time, the Raiders have posted five consecutive losing seasons.
