Denver Broncos History

The Denver Broncos are a part of the American Football Conference (AFC) Western Division.  The Broncos began play in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League and joined the NFL as part of the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. The Broncos won the first-ever American Football League game defeating the New England Patriots , 13-10, on September 9, 1960 . That win was not indicative of what was to follow.  The Broncos were the worst of the AFL  teams, managing its first winning season in 1973 after thirteen years of futility. As such, they were the only original AFL team never to have played in the title game during the AFL 10-year history.

Rookie coach Red Miller , with the  aptly named ORANGE CRUSH DEFENSE  and aging quarterback Craig Morton , took the Broncos to their first playoff appearance in 1977 and ultimately first Super Bowl, where they were defeated by the Dallas Cowboys 27-10.  Denver had over 24 different starting quarterbacks in its first 23 seasons. In 1983 future Hall of Famer, and one of the NFL all-time great quarterbacks, John Elway came to the Broncos. Denver was on its way.  Denver has reached the Super Bowl six times, winning twice in the 1997 and 1998 seasons.   Elway would remain the quarterback through five Super Bowls, three under head coach Dan Reeves and two under Mike Shanahan . In 1997, Elway together with the Broncos 3rd year running back,  Terrell Davis, lead the Broncos to their 1st Super Bowl victory and earn Davis SuperBowl XXXII MVP honors.  The Broncos repeated as Super Bowl Champions the following year, defeating the Atlanta Falcons (led by former head coach Dan Reeves), 34-19, to win Super Bowl XXXIII  and Elway was named the MVP of Super Bowl XXXIII .  This game would be Elways last NFL game. John Elway retired prior to the start of the 1999 season.

Since Elway retired, the team has made the playoffs as a wild card three times (in 2000, 2003 and 2004) and as a division champion once in 2005. However, the Broncos have won only one playoff game since 1999.  In 2007 the team suffered through an injury plagued season finishing with a rare 7-9 losing record and failed to make the playoffs.
