The Nebraska Cornhuskers 117 Years of Football
The Nebraska Cornhuskers represent the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
in
National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I-A football
program
. The "Huskers" football team has established itself as a traditional powerhouse, and has the fourth-most all-time victories of any NCAA Division I-A
team. The Cornhuskers first played football in 1890 and are currently in their 117th season. In October 2006 Nebraska became only the 4th program in NCAA Division I-A history to win 800 games and prior to the start of the 2008 hold an all-time record of 808–334–40. Nebraska The Cornhuskers are the winningest college football program of the last 50 years, both by winning percentage and number of wins.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers have won 46 conference championships and part or all of five national championships in 1970,1971,
1994, 1995
and 1997
. This marked the first time any
team has won three national championships in four seasons since Notre Dame in 1946-1949. Nebraska posted a 60-3-0 record between the 1993-97 seasons. No team has come close to breaking this record. Since claiming the national title in 1997 the Cornhuskers, with the exception of a #2 ranking in 1999, have earned no higher than a number 7 ranking and have finished the season unranked in 2002, 2004, 2006 andd 2007. Nebraska ended the 2002 season with 7 wins and 7 losses
ending several long-running streaks: a 40 year streak of winning seasons, 21 years ranked in the top 25, and 44 years since finishing with 3 straight losses.
The most successful head coach in Cornhusker history is Tom Osborne, who led the team for 25 seasons, from 1973
to 1997
; his final record at Nebraska was 255 wins, 49 losses and 3 ties. During his tenure, the team won three national titles, including one in his final season. Osborne coached teams won at least 9 games every season and 5 times managed to win 12 or more. Osborne handpicked assistant coach Frank Solich as his replacement. After 2002s 7-7 finish
Solich led the team to a 9-3 regular season record but that wasn't enough to save his job. Nebraska athletic director Steve Pederson
fired Solich.
Pederson, in a break from tradition decided to hire the former coach of the Oakland Raiders, Bill Callahan
. Callahan was the first head coach in recent history not to be hand-picked by his predecessor. Second, Callahan implemented the West Coast Offense at Nebraska, a team known for years for their run-oriented triple-option offense. Fans were excited
when Nebraska cruised to 56-17 win over the Western Illinois Leathernecks. but that soon faded as the Cornhuskers lost their home opener and finished the season with a 5-6 record, the first losing season in over 40 years. Former head coach Tom Osborne replaced Pederson as atletic director in 2007. Osborne fired head coach Callahan and hired Bo Pelini as the Huskers new coach.
