The Duke University Blue Devils Dynasty

In 1906, Wilbur Wade Card, Trinity College's Athletic Director, introduced the game of basketball to Trinity. The January 30 issue of The Trinity Chronicle headlined the new sport on its front page. Trinity lost their first basketball game to Wake Forest, 24-10. The Trinity team won its first title, the state championship, in 1920 by beating the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (now NC State) 25 to 24. Earlier in the season they had beat their fiercest rival, the University of North Carolina 19-18 in the first match-up between the two schools. In 1924, tobacco industrialist James Buchanan Duke established The Duke Endowment, prompting the institution to change its name in honor of his deceased father.

In 1952, Dick Groat became the first Duke player to be named National Player of the Year. The Duke team under Vic Bubas made its first appearance in the Final Four in 1963, losing 74-71 to Loyola in the semifinals. The next year, Bubas team reached the national title game, losing to the Bruins of UCLA, who claimed 10 titles in the next 12 years. In August 1972, the NCAA hit Duke with a one-year postseason ban. Two years later in 1974, Duke became the eighth school in NCAA history to notch 1000 victories.

The Duke Blue Devils are the fourth-winningest men's basketball program of all-time. Through the end of the 2008 season they have tallied 1846 victories, forth on the all-time list, behind Kentucky, North Carolina, and Kansas. Eleven Duke players have been named the National Player of the Year, and 71 Blue Devils have been drafted by the NBA.
