University of Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The University of Arizona participates in the NCAA Division I Pacific Ten Conference. Arizona joined the PAC-10 in 1978 along with Arizona State University, bringing the conference to its current 10 teams. University of Arizona fielded its first men's basketball team in 1904-05. Orin Albert Cates coached the team and drew opponents from local YMCAs. In 1972 Fred Snowden was hired as the head basketball coach, making Arizona the second Division I school and the first major program to hire an African American head coach. The UA mens basketball team has been one of the most successful programs since current head coach Lute Olson was hired in 1983 and is a national powerhouse in Division I mens basketball.

The team has amassed 20 consecutive 20-win seasons form 1987-2007 before the streak ended with the Wilcats 19-15 2008 record. As of 2008, the Arizona basketball team has reached the NCAA Tournament for 24 consecutive years, which is the longest active streak, and second only to the North Carolina Tarheels 27 year streak from 1975-2001. The Wildcats have reached the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament on four occasions (1988, 1994, 1997, and 2001). In 1997, Arizona defeated the University of Kentucky, the defending national champions, to win the NCAA National Championship. In Pac-10 play, Lute Olson holds the record for most wins as a Pac-10 coach at 327. In addition, the team has won 11 Pac-10 regular season titles and 4 Pac-10 tournament titles. Arizona also holds the distinction of recording 5 out of the 7 17-1 Pac-10 seasons (one-loss seasons). No team has gone undefeated in Pac-10 play.

In 1997, Arizona defeated the University of Kentucky, the defending national champions, to win the NCAA National Championship. To advance to the National Championship game and defeat the defending national champion UK Wildcats, Arizona first accomplished the unprecedented and unequaled feat of beating three number one seeds (Kansas, Providence, and North Carolina) in the same tournament .
