The Phoenix Suns 2008 Outlook

 

Starting the 2007-08 season Phoenix might have been the fastest NBA team ever assembled. The Suns were great offensive team last season but this years team looked like we may not have seen anything yet. They replaced the team's slowest rotation player, Kurt Thomas, with one of the league's fastest, Grant Hill.  The Suns looked poised to push the pedal even further to the metal this season, leaving other teams in their dust. But things dont always go according to plan.  Disturbed and angered by persistent trade rumors, forward Shawn Marion, who had spent his entire career as a Phoenix Sun and a fan favorite asked to be traded.  Marion was still with the team as the All-Star break approached, but as trade rumors continued and other distractions also plagued the team the Suns play was suffering. On Feb. 7th Phoenix decided that adding a big man like future Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal would help the team now facing in the near future, a healthy Laker lineup with three 7 footers.   The Suns also saw other Western Conference rivals making big trades. Phoenix sent disgruntled forward Shawn Marion and guard Marcus Banks to the Miami heat for Shaq. 

 

The deal made sense financially for the Suns, but that's about where it ends.  36 year old Shaq's presence in the Suns' lineup changes the tempo of the game, the style of play and the Suns overall performance.  He can't keep up with Nash, Barbosa or Stoudemire, though he is making ever effort to improve his physical condition and blend more easily with his new team.  While his post presence might offer some hope against foes like San Antonio and now the Lakers, but it is doubtful he can contribute enough to warrant the trade.  O'Neal is giving just about everything the Suns hoped for in terms of minutes, production and interior presence. But they were also hoping the trade would include a healthy dose of lost mojo and get The Suns fired up again.
