Cleveland Cavaliers 2008 Outlook
LeBron James, the offense of an NBA team ranked near the bottom in most offensive categories. Yet somehow the Cavs were winners of 50 games in 2006-07 and Eastern Conference Champions. Despite those numbers Cleveland ranked 19th in offensive efficiency because of the one thing they did do well: offensive rebounding. The four-man combo of Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Drew Gooden, Anderson Varejao and Donyell Marshall was as deep and effective as any in basketball. Three of those players had offensive rebound rates above 11, and because of them Cleveland was the league's third-best offensive rebounding team, pulling down 29.7 percent of its missed shots. That the Cavaliers had so many missed shots magnified the effect of the rebounds on their offensive rating.
Cleveland's edge on the boards extended to the defensive end as well. The Cavs were second in defensive rebound rate, pulling down 75.8 percent of opponents' missed shots; between the offense and defense Cleveland ranked second in the league in combined rebound rate. But defensively, the Cavs were good at much more than just rebounding. Their defense was the main reason they won 50 games and ended up in the Finals. The Cavaliers defense on first shots was the league's sixth-best, and overall they ranked fourth in defensive efficiency. Defensively, Cleveland was good at nearly everything, including forcing a high rate of turnovers and a subpar shooting percentage, but where they really excelled was -- cutting off the 3-point line.
That Cleveland could win the East owed to three things. Two of them were the weakness of the conference and James ability to carry an otherwise horrid offensive team. But the most important was their defense and rebounding. This year looks to be much the same with only a couple minor offseason changes made to address their offensive weakness. The Eastern Conference, with the exception of the Celtics, Pistons and Orlando Magic is very weak, possibly making Cleveland once again the best of the worst.
