Though new manager Lou Pinella guided the Cubs to a first place finish in the National Central Division, it is hard to laud their achievement. The Cubs won their very weak division with only 85 wins, finishing just eight games over .500, and then were swept by a highly beatable Arizona team in the first round of the playoffs.

Zell pledged to sell the team quickly - first saying it would happen as soon as the 2007 season ended, then by the start of this season. Now, as would-be buyers wait impatiently for bidding to begin, one
person involved in the bidding said the sale is now unlikely to occur until after the 2008 baseball season. With the uncertainties surrounding the sale of the team and ballpark, it's hard to know what the organization will or will not do. One thing that seems certain is that there won't be much player movement. The Cubs hit only 151 home runs last year, 11th in the National league and so a big move is not out of the question. After unimpressive run production last year from their 3 big hitters, Alfonso Soriano, Derrek Lee, and Aramis Ramirez, the Cubs are hoping that this season their powerful lineup will be scoring runs more consistently and in the numbers expected from those big bats.
